Sampson County Jail Roster

The Sampson County, North Carolina Jail Roster is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the county jail. SampsonCourt.us provides access to public information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, by visiting the facility in person, or by calling the jail. A search of the roster allows you to find out a person's custody status, charges, and booking date. The roster is maintained by the Sampson County Sheriff's Office and is regularly updated to reflect changes in the inmate population.

Search Current Inmates in Sampson Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is in custody at the Sampson County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to SampsonCourt.us to search for publicly available court and arrest information.
  2. Enter the person's full legal name or booking number, if known.
  3. Review the results — they usually include the name, date of birth, charges, and custody status.

To check court cases related to the detention, use the North Carolina Judicial Branch portal for Sampson County, where you can search by name or case number.

If the person has been transferred to a state-level facility, a search is available through the NC Department of Adult Correction offender search tool.

By Phone

Call the jail and provide the person's full name and date of birth. The dispatcher can confirm if the person is in custody.

In-Person Visit

Find Sampson Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created when a detained person is officially processed into the jail. It is the first document that records the person's custody.

During the booking process, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of arrest and processing
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency (sheriff, Clinton city police, etc.)
  • Primary identification information — name, date of birth, photo

Access to these records can be obtained in several ways. The quickest is the online roster on the sheriff's website or through SampsonCourt.us. If the record does not appear in the electronic roster, submit a public records request. The NC Judicial Branch explains the procedure for requesting public records — the same mechanism applies to records related to criminal cases.

For older records or cases that have already been closed, a written request may be required directly to the sheriff's office.

Search the Sampson Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the search field. You can add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Use exact spelling — even one incorrect letter can result in empty results.
  • If the system supports partial search, try entering just the first few letters of the last name.
  • For common last names, add the first or middle name.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it directly. This is the most accurate method — it returns a single record without duplicates.

What to Do If There Are No Results?

An empty result does not always mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  1. The person has already been released — the roster only reflects those currently in custody.
  2. Booking is not yet complete — there may be a few hours between actual detention and the record appearing in the system.
  3. The name was entered incorrectly or recorded differently than in documents.
  4. The person was transferred to another facility — check the NC state offender search.

If none of the options help, call the jail directly.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Sampson

The inmate roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but it is not a real-time system. There is usually a delay between the time of detention and the appearance of the record in the online roster — from a few hours to the next business day.

Key limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay after booking. A new inmate appears in the roster only after the booking process is complete, fingerprints are taken, and data is entered into the system.
  • Disappearance after release. When a person is released on bail or by court order, the record is removed from the active roster. This can happen quickly.
  • Not an archive. The roster only shows the current inmate population. For past records, contact the sheriff's office or use the NC court records portal.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a name may be recorded incorrectly or under an alternative spelling. If you cannot find the person you are looking for, try variations of the name.

For a full criminal history or background check, there is a separate process — the "Court Records" section on the NC Judicial Branch website explains how to order a criminal background check or request record expunction.
